Thoughts on the Matt Schaub Deal
The Houston Texans made a deal as an attempt to solidify their quarterbacking woes by trading for backup QB Matt Schaub. They signed the back up to a 6-year 48 million deal and officially named his the starter on Thursday. While I personally have been impressed by Schaub’s abilities and was rooting for a trade elsewhere, the deal for the Texans is a little excessive if not eyebrow raising.
Firstly the Atlanta Falcons did a good job of not getting just one 2nd rounder (which I thought he was worth) but they got themselves an addition one plus a nice little bonus to move two sports up in the draft. The two 2nd rounders have amazing value especially if the Texans losing ways continue. Good job on Atlanta to wait on Schaub as his value has increased steadily over the years.
As for the Texans, you can officially call David Carr a bust as he is being shopped around for a 4th round pick and that ay not even happen. As for Schaub not only did they pay what I would call a premium in picks they also paid a premium with him signing that contract. The contract may be well earned provided Schaub plays well. As much I believe Schaub will be a success in the NFL, he has only started 2 games in his 3 year NFL career. The move in the end can look even more disastrous.
With the same deal they gave up, I believe they could have used those picks to move up and get either Brady Quinn or Jamarcus Russell the projected 1 and 2 in this year’s draft. I strongly believe Schaub will have a better career then Quinn as I believe Schaub can grab a few pro-bowls with his style of play and Quinn looks like an average NFL QB as he struggles with throwing picks and doesn’t seem like the big time QB the Texans needed if they had traded up to get him. I think Jamarcus Russell will be better than Schaub though.
In the end, Schaub who is 26 years old (2 years younger then David Carr) MUST produce efficiently and effectively and he has to produce NOW. He has a lot of pressure on his shoulders and there is no more waiting if he will do well because this is his first chance to take the reigns of his offense. I wish him luck as I will be rooting for him.
