Thoughts on the Michael Nylander issue
Michael Nylander has always been a good point producer and I really like him despite his age. He looks like the type of player that will age well as his skill set are not dependent on speed or toughness (that he never had). The only problem for Nylander would be staying healthy but either way he joins the top line and should form a very nice relationship with superstar Alex Ovechkin. He’s is apparently the quiet type of guy that racks up points while in the shadow of others so he’s a perfect fit in the low key Capitals team that is rebuilding. Overall, it’s a good sign by Washington as they needed to spend some money to get over the minimum salary to spend and spending it on a former player is always good for PR etc.
The Edmonton Oilers cried foul that they had a verbal agreement between Nylander to apparently a larger contract. However, Nylander never officially signed anything so there is nothing that can be done on Edmonton’s part. I am on Washington’s side with this one as it has nothing to do with them and they get a player at apparently below market value as there were other teams looking for his services. Edmonton can’t cry foul because nothing was officially agreed to. This is like real life, sometimes we have liars and people who back out of agreements for what we perceive to be better and unless it’s official nothing comes out of it as it’s life and there’s nothing we can do about it. The only steps Edmonton can take is boycotting the agent like MLB teams do with Scott Boras. If I were in Kevin Lowe’s position that’s exactly what I would do.
Edmonton shouldn’t be crying foul as it makes them look dumb and the assholes/dumbshits we call a media were using it as an excuse in the Vanek ordeal to justify it. I am sure this isn’t the first time this has happened as it’s happened to many people in real life and I am sure teams have screwed players over on agreements like with physicals and other sorts that are clearly unfair to the player. Otherwise nothing special will come out of this ordeal. Edmonton still has a weaker team with or without Nylander, Nylander gets to play in a better position racking up assists but both teams look like more sleepers then contenders anyway.
